Six weeks after the earthquake that struck northeastern Japan, the region's sake breweries are getting back on their feet. Roads leading south have been repaired, and brewers are urging people to do their part for economic recovery—by drinking Tohoku's superb sakes during the festive cherry-blossom season.

Here in Hawaii, we are happy to do our part. This month's Aftertaste event features outstanding labels from Aomori, Iwate, Fukushima, Miyagi and Yamagata prefectures, including many award-winners from the 2010 U.S. National Sake Appraisal.

A total of 40 junmai, ginjo an daiginjo sakes will be available for tasting from 6:00 to 7:00, followed by Cupola's tantalizing appetizer buffet and a congenial hour of sake sipping until 8:00 p.m.

Reservations may be made online at the Aftertaste Ticket Store. Or call Pua at (808) 222-5591. All sales are final and attendance is limited to 70 persons.

Prior to the event, there will be a brief talk on the outlook for Tohoku sake in 2011. How about 2012? Do we need to be worried about radiation getting into water and rice? These and other topics will be addressed.
